I was born with two feet for a reason. No one can represent my interests but me.

— Lucien to Ember

Lucien Albus Norvel Coquellin (b. 1 February) is a French-born English wizard of the Cauldwell and Coquellin families, the only child of the late Irish wizard Albus Cauldwell and famous French witch Sylvie Coquellin. He was named after his father as well as his late maternal great-grandfather. After Albus's unexpected death, Sylvie fled to France, where she subsequently gave birth to and raised Lucien for the first few early years of his life. The pair moved back to Britain when he was five following a large dispute between Sylvie and her parents, bringing him closer to his paternal family.

Upon attending Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, Lucien was Sorted into Gryffindor House for his. The process took a grand total of 6½ minutes as the Sorting Hat considered him for Ravenclaw, therefore making him a Hatstall.

Biography

Family lineage

"You descend from a line of great and powerful wizards, from a family that has been revered for generations, and feared by those who oppose all that is good and just."
Ember explains the Potter legacy to Lucien

Early life

Reilly Cauldwell: "He needs to be cared for."
Lily Leander: "He'll be more than capable of caring for himself one day. Son of Albus Cauldwell, grandson of Ember Cauldwell, great-grandson of us, and family to so many others. He will be a great wizard, and nothing will scare him."
Reilly and Lily regarding Lucien's future in the wizarding world

Lucien Albus Norvel Coquellin was born on 1st February to Sylvie Coquellin in Bordeaux, a famed wine-growing region and port city in southwestern France. His parents, who had been living together in England at the time of Lucien's conception, were anxious and shocked when they discovered Sylvie was pregnant. The two were not romantically involved, and neither considered themselves stable enough to start a family — Sylvie was still struggling to find employment, while Albus had begun to dabble habitually with prescription drugs. Albus in particular expressed worry and regret towards the possibility of being a father, fearing his child may inherit the same heart disease he was afflicted with. However, these doubts quickly fell away to feelings of joy and excitement, and the pair agreed to co-parent and share the duties of raising their future child. They agreed on the first name Lucien, meaning "light" in French, and the middle name Norvel, in honour of Sylvie's late paternal grandfather.

Reactions to the pregnancy were mixed: most members of the Potter family were overjoyed at the addition of a new member, although Ember questioned the practicality of their co-parenting arrangement. Keiko Walter, a witch who Albus had been in a committed relationship with at the time, was upset when she caught wind of the pregnancy and angrily ended things with Albus once she realised he had been unfaithful. The family were ultimately forced to band together two months into the pregnancy when one of Keiko's friends tipped the story to the Daily Prophet, sparking media frenzy. Upon hearing the news, Sylvie's parents wrote, demanding she return to France and give birth there; Sylvie refused on principle that the Potters could provide a more tender environment for the baby. In the end, it was decided that Albus and Sylvie would move to the Ealaithe and raise their child in a setting of utmost privacy.

On 30th December, a month before Lucien was due to be born, Albus died of a heart attack. Sylvie expressed little emotion after the tragedy, but eventually broke down at Albus's funeral, causing members of the family to fear that a combination of her grief and stress may interfere with the pregnancy. Overwhelmed by their constant concern, Sylvie remained in Britain for only several more days before she fled to France, giving birth to Lucien in her home city of Bordeaux. A second middle name, Albus, was added after his birth in order to pay homage to his late father.

  • Bilingualist: Lucien was fluent in his native French as well as being fully fluent in English. Unlike his mother, he did not speak with a strong French accent unless speaking in the language itself. He was capable of switching between the two languages in conversation seamlessly, and used this language most at home when communicating with his mother.

  • Hornbeam wand: Lucien's wand was manufactured by Émeric Morin and purchased from France prior to beginning his magical education at Hogwarts. It was thirteen and a quarter inches long, thick and rigid, and made of hornbeam with a kelpie hair core. Wands made from hornbeam are said to select a talented wizard who is passionate. They adapt more quickly than almost any other to their owner’s style of magic, and likewise absorb their owner’s code of honour, refusing to perform acts that do not tally with their master’s principles. Lucien used this wand all throughout his life.

Quotes

Lucien: But I'm universally popular and well-liked. Why would anyone want to kill me?

Lucien: Come on, Marcia. We have a diem to carpe.

Lucien: I'm going to faint.
Rhiannon: You faint at the sight of blood?
Lucien: No, but I just might at the sight of a chopped off leg!

Alanis: So, they're all banshees. What about you?
Lucien: Oh, I turn into a big round snowman. That's only at Christmas time, though. Very seasonal.

Lucien: There's only one thing we as youths should be inserting in ourselves, and that's knowledge.

Lucien: I have a thing. It's like a plan, but with more greatness.

Rhiannon: We didn't make a difference at all.
Lucien: I wouldn't say that. The way I see it, every life is a pile of good things and bad things. Hey. The good things don't always soften the bad things, but vice-versa, the bad things don't spoil the good things and make them unimportant.

Lucien: I stopped explaining myself when I realised people only understand from their level of perception.

Lucien: Wouldn't bother. C'est comme si on pissait dans un violon.
Rhiannon: What?
Lucien: I said it's useless.
Rhiannon: That did not sound like "it's useless".
Lucien: That's because I said it's like pissing in a violin.
Rhiannon: Meaning?
Lucien: It's useless.

Lucien: Death doesn't happen to you. It happens to everyone around you, to all the people left standing at your funeral, trying to figure out how they can live the rest of their lives without you in it.

Lucien: Some people live more in twenty years than others do in eighty. It's not the time that matters, it's the person.

Lucien: I'm not scared. It's not in my nature.

Lucien: It's just.... pure mindless vandalism!
Shopowner: What's the matter with you? Are you mentally deficient?
Lucien: If I was mentally deficient, I would have missed. Check that out. Bullseye.

Frey: House elves want to work. It's normal.
Lucien: I once met a house elf whose life ambition was to have his head cut off and stuck up on a plaque like his mother. Tell me, is that normal, Frey?

Lucien: God, there's a time and a place for getting a smart mouth.

Lucien: We're young! We're meant to drink too much! We're meant to cast bad magic and have bad attitudes and do bad things! We are designed for fun. And yes, maybe a couple of us will accidentally lose our legs or go slightly crazy. But as Albus Dumbledore once said, you can't make an omelette without breaking a few eggs! And that's what it's all about! Breaking eggs! If you could just see yourselves... it breaks my heart. You're wearing cardigans! We had it all. We have fucked up far better than any generation that came before us. We were so beautiful! C'est la vie! C'est la vie!

Ramona: What do you mean no?
Lucien: I mean no. Would you like to hear it in French? Non!

Lucien: In my eighteen years of living, I've never met anyone who wasn't important before.
