I think a life without regret would be no life at all.

— Callum to Ivory

Callum Erastus Cridden (b. 16 June) is a half-blood wizard of the Cridden family, the only son born to Erastus and Bernetta Cridden. He was born and raised in Puddlemere in the West Country, and despite having no siblings grew up alongside a large wizarding family, all of whom were equally as boisterous as himself. He is also a supposed relative of the wizard Samson Cridden, who claimed descension from several of the Hogwarts founders.

Callum attended Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in the year below Ember Cauldwell and Maisie Thorn, where he was Sorted into Gryffindor House. He quickly became best friends with Thomas Fletcher. Throughout his school years, Callum was generally known for his blunt and insolent attitudes, sporting what many classified as a "big mouth". He also held a series of roles throughout his span of the school, acting as both Quidditch Commentator and a brief reserve for the Gryffindor Quidditch team, as well as a member of Duelling Club and Dumbledore's Army.

  • Holly wand: Callum's wand was manufactured by Orland Ollivander and purchased from his shop in Diagon Alley prior to beginning his magical education. It was ten inches long, made of holly wood with pegasus feather as its core. Holly is a fairly rare wood; traditionally considered protective, it works most happily for those who may need help overcoming a tendency to anger and impetuosity. They also often choose owners who are engaged in some dangerous and often spiritual quest.

Etymology[]

The name Callum is a Scottish Gaelic name that means "dove" or "dove king", to commemorates the Latin name Columba. St. Columba was one of the most influential of the early Celtic saints. The name may also be spelled "Calum".

Erastus is the Latinised form of the Greek name Εραστος (Erastos) meaning "beloved". This was the name of an assistant of Paul mentioned in Acts and two epistles in the New Testament.

The name Cridden comes from when a family lived in the village of Crotynden in West Kent. This lost village is thought to have derived its name from the Old English personal name Gu(dh)here + Old English "-ing" and "denn."

Quotes[]

Callum: What's the bar like?
Amy: You do know that there's no such thing as a hospital bar.
Callum: What? Well, no wonder people hate hospitals.
